Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory disorder where uterine like tissue grows outside of the uterus. It was traditionally diagnosed only with a laparoscopic surgery. However, this year ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists') released an article with new diagnosis guidelines involving clinical findings and imaging testing.
These new diagnosis guidelines are to help support those with clinically suspected endo who have not or cannot have the laparoscopic surgery. The aim is to reach a diagnosis faster, previously taking an average of 10 years, and provide the much needed support for symptoms much sooner.
Some common symptoms...
Heavy periods "menorrhagia"
Cramping and discomfort that interfere with life / Chronic Pelvic Pain
Gastrointestinal symptoms (urgency, frequency, bloating, IBS, constipation)
Pain during intimacy "dyspareunia" / Infertility
Fatigue
You are not alone. Endo affects 1 in 10 individuals with a uterus in the US. Symptoms can start even before a girl's first period. There is no known cause or cure. It is not cured by surgery or pregnancy. However, it can be treated and symptoms managed. I say often that we need a team of Healthcare providers, but truly, this diagnosis needs a team! You could be supported by multiple Healthcare providers depending on your symptoms and history. (Gyn, PCP, PT, OT, Nutritionist, Counselor, Therapist, GI doctor, Endocrinologist, Hormone specialist, etc. )
Here is what Pelvic Floor PT can do for you.
Help manage your pain by improving fascia and joint mobility, and overall circulation

Relief can take time due to the multiple systems that can be affected by Endo. Pain perception can change day to day and a flare up can happen in different seasons of life. Pelvic floor physical therapy can support you through this journey.
